The NPL Wine society holds some six tasting evenings throughout the year where wines are presented informally to the attending members.
These range in price between £5 and £10 per person and usually include a sparkling wine, four white and four red wines selected according to the theme of the evening. At the end of the evening, the wines are rated on a scale from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest) (see our modest database) and the prices of the wines disclosed by the presenter.
Some recent tastings have been: Australian wines, Champagne tasting, English wines, Spanish wines from Vinites UK, Supermarket challenge, Portuguese wines, Spanish wines by a spaniard, Riesling and Pinot Noir with an Alsatian bias.

A barbeque, held in the summer and the Annual General Meeting, in December, present a wider variety of wines and more substantial food than the usual bread and cheese. Attendance has to be confirmed in advance by notifying the membership secretary.

In 2003, a series of "fine wine" tastings has started, with a slightly different format. These tastings will include a varying number of wines and will present a chance for members to taste wines of great international reputation at a limited cost. Numbers are usually limited for these tastings.
The first of this series, "An overview of the Madoc", took place on March 4th and included wines such as Chateau Palmer 1995, Chateau Leoville-Barton 1996, Chateau Leoville-Las-Cases 1994, Chateau Cos d'Estournel 1997 and Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1997 and some generic Madoc and other crus bourgeois for £20 (members) or £22 (non-members).
The second fine wine tasting, "A visit to St. Julien" will take place on 23 February 2005 and will include a selection of wines from this top AOC in Bordeaux. Further details will be published on this page If you require further information about the NPL Wine Society, e-mail Paul Munday Want to join us? The dates in 2004 for our coming tastings are:
  • 15 December, when our AGM and Christmas party will take place.
  • 27 January, for a selection of wines presented by Nick Fletcher.
  • 23 February, when Christopher Edwards will present the second fine wine tasting "A visit to St. Julien". See you there!
